What we do:

Since 2017, Kiez Mobil, a wooden cart on wheels, has been offering glass fusing workshops for youths in under-served areas of Berlin and its surroundings. Glass fusing is an ancient technique that involves cutting, shaping, and fixing glass to create unique designs with layers of colored glass. Best of all, children learn to cut the glass themselves!

The program provides a unique opportunity for kids from diverse backgrounds and encourages confidence and creativity. Working with glass is commonly considered dangerous, but mastering this new skill is empowering. The children also form friendships with each other. Each workshop is themed around the seasons, local events, or specific techniques.

At the end of the session, the panels are collected and taken to the Berlin Glas studio to be fired overnight in a kiln at 780°C. The result is a colorful artwork that is sent back to the children the next day. Glass comes from a historic region of the Middle East, Mesopotamia, and has been traveling the world for centuries, crossing countries, creating cultural exchanges, and allowing people to learn from each other. Inspired by this unique material, we aim to promote how glass has been and continues to be an important element in linking cultures and overcoming boundaries and stereotypes.

Kiez Mobil provides a unique opportunity to discover the exceptional technique of glass fusing and the material itself. Although seemingly challenging, it requires responsibility, awareness, patience, and perseverance. We believe that teaching these qualities to youths is important, and the artworks they create are both magical and powerful.

The activity is safe for kids as young as 8 years old, and limitless in its possibilities to inspire creativity!

What we offer:

– Two instructors will come fully equipped with all the tools and materials needed for the workshop.
– Children from 8 years and up can participate.
– Groups of up to 12 are possible.
– Sessions run for 2 hours.
– Workshops are instructed in German or English.
– Developing fine motor skills and learning a new technique.
– Strengthening confidence and creativity.
